Kenny Chesney Gillette tickets going on sale 9 months early

If you live in the Boston area, you may have caught recent ads for the Kenny Chesney Gillette Stadium concert with Zac Brown Band. They're airing on TV and even have a prominent spot on Boston.com.

Did you notice the date for this Kenny Chesney Gillette concert? It's Aug. 27, 2011. And tickets go on sale Saturday.

As in, this Saturday.

Nov. 20.

2010.

That's more than nine months in advance! You could buy tickets that morning, have sex that night and have a kid before the Kenny Chesney Gillette concert.

When I first saw the ad on TV and heard the announcer say "August 27th!" in that "Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!" monster-truck voice, I honestly thought there was some mistake. Like, the Kenny Chesney Gillette concert must have taken place this past August, and the local cable company accidentally ran an old commercial. But no, tickets really are going on sale nine months ahead of time.

Chesney's stadium tour starts in March, and it's perfectly normal to sell tickets four months in advance. But there's no rule that says you have to put all tickets for a tour on sale on the same day.

Chesney is one of the biggest draws in live music, but overall the concert business is suffering. Promoters across the country are basically giving tickets away to get fans into shows, as was the case at last year's AC/DC concert at Gillette Stadium. I went with about 20 friends, none of whom paid more than $20 and many of whom got free tickets.

Will the Kenny Chesney Gillette concert suffer the same fate? It's hard to imagine, but putting tickets on sale so far in advance does smell a little bit like desperation.
